Wade Whimsies

 

This is my collection of Wade Whimsies. It started in 1976 when I purchased my first whimsie whilst on holiday in Rustington, West Sussex. I was 9 years old.

Alsatian

This Alsatian is from the first Whimsie collection 1957-1961 and is from set 7 'Pedigree Dogs.' Looking online a mint condition one can go for around £10 on auction sites.

Angelfish

According to some auction sites, this angelfish is from Set 9 'Sea Creatures' and dates to around 1978. It has little worth and would sell for between £1 and £3.

Ape

This Wade ape is from set 1 of the 1998 collection. It's seen on eBay at £7.99.

Armadillo

From around 1984/85, this is an armadillo and is worth around £3.00.

Artist 'Edward' - Bear Ambitions

This whimsie is part of the 'Bear Ambitions' set (dated 1995) and is around £4 in value.

Baby Seal

From the first series of Wade Whimsies, set 6 of 'Polar Animals,' and dates back to 1956-1961, this has been sold on an auction site £14.50.

Badger

This is the badger from Wade Whimsies Hedgerow Crackers and features in the British Wildlife Animal collection. It dates around 1980 and is worth £3.00-5.00.

'Bambi' Baby Deer

Dated around the mid-1970s, this is a baby deer also known as Bambi from the Walt Disney animated movie. It's worth around £5.00.

Barn Owl

This is the barn owl and is from the English Whimsies collection between 1971-1984 and is valued around £5.00.

Bear - Circus

This is one of the many circus animals that were featured inside of crackers in the 1970s. It's been seen on eBay for as much as £13.39 but realistically is probably worth around £6.00-8.00.

Bear Cub

This is the Wade bear cub (though I always thought it was a kitten). It is from the Red Rose Tea collection of wildlife animals and is worth around £2.50.

Beatrice 'Ballerina' - Bear Ambitions

This whimsie is part of the 'Bear Ambitions' set (dated 1995) and is around £4 in value.

Beaver

This is the beaver from 1972. It's worth around £3.00.

'Bengo' the bulldog

A rare vintage wade whimsies Bengo the bulldog from Bengo and his Puppy Friends. I've seen him described as a boxer puppy, too. Bengo was released between 1959-65 as part of the Bengo and his friend's title tv pets set - including Whiskey, Chee-Chee, Droopy Jnr, Fifi, Pepi, Bruno Jnr, Mitzy, Percy, Simon and Bengo himself. On his own, it's valued at £25.00.

Billy Goat - coloured

This billy goat is from 1982/1983 Tom Smith - Set 5 Farmyard Series - Goat (Ver B). On eBay, it is selling for $19.99 (approximately £15).

I also have the golden version of this billy goat.

Bird Bath

This is the traditional bluebird mounted on a trinket dish. It's been seen on eBay for £7.50.

Bluebird

This is the bluebird and comes from Wade's English series, set 11 and is from between 1979 and 1984. It's worth around £3.00.

Blue Seal

Here's a blue seal, also known as sea lion and dates around the mid-1980s. It's approximately worth £3.95.

Blue Whale

This is another in the series of Tom Smith's party crackers. This is the blue whale and featured in the Survival set. It's only worth around £1.50.

'Bronti' - Dinosaur

From the original cartoon series of The Flintstones, this is 'Bronti' the dinosaur. It dates around 1965 and is worth approximately £6.00.

Buffalo

This is the buffalo but also known as the bison from Wade Whimsies. It is from the Red Rose Tea collection and is worth about £2.00.

Bull

This Wade Whimsie is the bull from the Farmyard series and dates around 1982-1983. Its value is around £4.00.

I have a dark brown version of this bull, too.

Bull - minikins

This vintage Wade Whimsie is the beige bull/cow and from the Minikins range. It's valued at £18.00.

Bulldog

This beige bulldog comes from the World of Dogs set produced by Wade for Tom Smith's party crackers during the period 1990-1991. It's worth around £4.00.

Butterfly

My sister Amanda bought me this beautiful butterfly and posted it to me, along with the large Red Setter, mouse sleeping and red crab. Ain't that nice of her? I estimate that this is worth between £2.00-4.00.

Camel

The camel - another from the Red Rose Tea Party Crackers series and worth around £5.50.

I have the light version of this camel, too.

Cat

Wade Whimsie cat from 1977. It's worth about £4.00.

Cat and the fiddle

Wade's Cat And The Fiddle whimsie is from the Red Rose Tea Party Crackers series and dates between 1972-1979. It's worth around £5.90.

Cat in a basket

The Wade Cat in a basket is around £9.00 in value.

Cat Minikins

Minikins were introduced as a low-cost follow-up to the highly successful 1st Series of Whimsies that were being sold at the time. They were sold for only one shilling each and Wade had made over 1 million of them by the time Series C was put on the market in 1957. They were produced during the period 1955‑1959 in 3 Sets (of 4 figurines each) referred to as A B and C with many different applied decorations & colour combinations, which resulted in well over a 100 different variations that can be found. this is the cat from 1956/56 and is on auction at an American site for 34 dollars which is £22.48.

Chimpanzee

The chimpanzee whimsie is dated 1973 and is only worth around £2.00.

Cockatiel

This is a cockatiel... the blue/grey version. It's selling on eBay for about £4.00.

Cockerel

Also referred to as a rooster, this Wade Whimsie Cockerel is from the Farmland series, dated 1985. It's been seen online for as much as £12.00.

Cocker Spaniel

This Cocker Spaniel whimsie is part of the Red Rose Tea party crackers and is dated between 1971-1974. It's worth around £6.40.

Cocker Spaniel - black

This black Cocker Spaniel is from Wade's Tom Smith & Co Ltd.'s 'World Of Dogs' series and dates around 1990-1991. It's been seen on eBay for as much £19.18.

Collie

The Wade Whimsie Collie comes from set 6 of the English Whimsies series dating between 1975-1984. It's only worth around £2.50

Corgi

The Wade Whimsie Corgi is from set 2 of the English Whimsies dating between 1972-1984. It's only worth around £2.50 but has been seen on etsy.com for £8.92.

Cougar

This is the cougar from set 9 of the North American Animals set, dated 1958-1961. It's showing online as worth £17.50.

Crab - red

This is the cougar from set 9 of the North American Animals set, dated 1958-1961. It's showing online as worth £17.50.

Crocodile

The crocodile, also known as the alligator, is from 1967. It's been seen on eBay for £2.99.

Dairy Cow

This is the cow, that I've named the dairy cow and it was from set 6 of the English Whimsies and dated 1975-1984. It's worth around £2.50.

Deer in log cutout 

This is a Wade deer with a cutout log that could be an ashtray or trinket or dish. It's been seen on eBay for around £8.00.

'Dino' dinosaur

This dinosaur, called 'Dino' was featured in the US comedy cartoon The Flintstones. Wade featured this whimsie in their Flintstones Party Crackers dated 1965 as well as Animal Party Crackers dated sometime around the late 1960s. On internet auction sites it's priced around £19-20.

Dolphin

The dolphin from Wade was featured in the Wildlife series of Party Crackers from Tom Smith. It's dated 1986-1987. It's valued around £3.00 but has been seen to go for £10.24 on another website.

Donkey

Wade's donkey comes from set 8 of the English Whimsies series dated between 1977 and 1984. It's worth around £5.00. I have seen the light version online for £11.00.

Dr Foster - black

There were two colours of Dr Foster's Wade whimsie. This is one is of the lesser value and is around £5.75. It was featured in the Tom Smith 'Tales From The Nursery' party crackers series.

I have the black version of Dr Foster, too.

Duck

The traditional duck from Wade was featured in set 2 of the English Whimsies between the period of 1971 and 1984. It's valued at around £2.50.

Duck on water

I called this whimsie duck on water but it's also referred to as a swimming duck. This was from the Farmyard set produced for Tom Smith's Party Crackers between 1982-1983. It's worth is around £2.50.

Eagle

Wade eagle is from the Birdlife series and dated between 1992-1993. It's valued around £4.00.

Elephant - grey

Wade elephant is from set 4 of the English Whimsies series during 1973-1984. It's worth about £4.00.

I have the blue version of this elephant, also.

Elephant - Circus

The seated circus elephant is from the circus animals set produced for Tom Smith's Party Crackers between 1978-1979. Its value is around £4.00.

Field Mouse

The Wade field mouse is from set 5 of the English Whimsies from the period between 1974 and 1984. It's worth around £2.50.

Fish

I can't find any information online about this whimsie and I'm not even sure it is an actual Wade whimsie now.

Fox

This fox from Wade was in British Wildlife series from 1980-1981. It's worth about £3.00.

Fox seated

This fox comes from set 2 of the English Whimsies and dates between 1972-1984. It's only worth about £2.50.

Frog

The Wade frog comes from the Canadian Red Rose Tea and made for party crackers between 1967-1973. It's valued at about £3.50.

German Shepherd

This German Shepherd, also referred to Alsatian was from the Red Rose Tea collection for party crackers. It's valued at around £2.50.

Gingerbread Man

The Wade gingerbread man is from set 2 of the Nursery Rhyme whimsies from 2001. It's on auction websites at around £7.50.

Giraffe - seated
The seated giraffe is from set 4 of the English Whimsies series from between 1973-1984. It's only worth around £2.50.

Giraffe - standing
This is the standing giraffe from Wade and featured from the Whimsie-land of the Wildlife series in 1984. It's valued at around £12.00.

Goose
The goose from Wade is from the Farmyard set for Tom Smith's Party Crackers during 1982-1983. It's worth around £3.00.

Grizzly Bear
This is the grizzly bear from 1958-1961 and comes from set 9 of the North American Animals of the first series. It's seen online as valued at £17.50 but have since seen it selling for £45.00.

Grizzly Cub
This whimsie is the grizzly cub and comes from set 9 of a 1958 collection. In mint condition, it's worth around £15.00.

Grouse
The Wade grouse is valued around £2.00.

Guinea Pig
According to the results of a search on the internet, this is a guinea pig. It's selling on eBay for around £6.00.

Hamster
I can't find any information online about this whimsie and for now, I've decided it's a hamster until I'm told otherwise.

Hare - golden
This Wade hare whimsie, golden in colour was from the British Wildlife series produced for Tom Smith's party crackers during 1980-1981. It's valued around £3.00

Hare - light
This light coloured Wade hare was seen on etsy.com for £6.00.

Hare - light
This white coloured version of the Wade hare comes from a series called Snowlife Animals from 1992-1996. It's valued at around £3.00.

Hedgehog
The classic Wade hedgehog comes from set 5 of the English Whimsies dating between 1974-1984 but only valued at £2.75.

Hickory Dickory Dock
Dated between 1994-1997, this Wade whimsie referred to as 'Hickory Dickory Dock' is from the Tales of the Nursery series and worth around £4.00.

Hippopotamus
This Wade whimsie is from set 3 of the English Whimsies and was produced between 1972-1984. It's only worth is £2.50.

Horse
The Wade horse whimsie from the second series dated between 1971-1984. It's valued at around £5.00.

Horse - Circus
Wade Circus Horse - from the circus animals series and sells for around £4.00.

House That Jack Built
From the Red Rose Tea series, this is That House Jack Built whimsie. It's valued at around £2.50.

Human Cannon
From the Red Rose Tea series, this is Wade's Human Cannon and is worth about £2.50.

Humpty Dumpty
One of the Nursery Rhyme Wade whimsies... this is the smaller standard size and is valued around £3.00.

Humpty Dumpty - large
This is the larger size version of Humpty Dumpty by Wade and is worth about £6.00.

Husky
From Wade's World of Dogs, this is the husky in white. It's been seen on eBay for £4.99.

Kangeroo
Wade Kangaroo from the Safari Park series - worth around £6.00.

Kitten - blue/grey
This kitten is a black colourway of the model from the Family Pets Series produced in 1988-1989. It is part of a limited edition of 1,200 commissioned for the 2000 Pennsylvania Wade Fest. The whimsie measures 1 inch in height and comes in excellent condition with no chips, cracks or restoration. It's worth about £8.50.

Kitten with a ball of wool
Here's one of three of the kitten with a ball of cotton - this one is two-tone. This kitten comes from Set 1 of the English Whimsies series produced during the period 1971-1984. It's only worth around £2.50.

Koala - dark
From Tom Smith's Safari Park Party Crackers series, this is a rare koala bear with its dark colours and has been online for £10.00.

Koala - light
This koala bear is from set 10 of the English Whimsies and dates to around 1979-1984. It's worth about £7.50.

Kodiak Bear
This Kodiak bear has been seen in two sizes. This is the larger size and dates back to as far as the 1950s. In mint condition, it's worth an impressive £31.00 but mine has a small chip in the base so it's not worth as much.

Labrador
Not a lot of information online about this dog from Wade. I believe to be a labrador and probably worth around £3.00.

Lady (from Lady and the Tramp)
Lady from the animated movie Lady and the Tramp. Large than the standard whimsie, this has been on eBay for £9.99.

Lamb
From set 6 of the English Whimsies and dated around 1975-1984, this Wade whimsie is valued at around £2.50.

I have this lamb as a light version, too.

Langur Monkey

This Langur monkey is on eBay for only 99p.

Leaping Fawn

This fawn comes from Set 1, English Animals, of the first whimsies series produced by Wade during the period 1954-1958. It's valued between £9 and £14.

Lemur
The Wade Whimsie Lemur... valued at around £3.00.

Leopard
This Wade whimsie leopard is from set 7 of the English Whimsies series and dates from 1976-1984. It's worth around £2.50.

Leprechaun
Leprechaun from Wade, also referred to as Leprechaun Crock of Gold, has been seen on eBay for £9.98.

Lion
This seated lion is from the Safari Park series of Wade whimsies and dates to around 1976. It's worth around £5.00.

The lion from Wade's Circus Animals series for party crackers is valued at around £4.00.

Lion Cub
This cub comes from set 8 of the Zoo animals series from 1957-1961. In mint condition would see for £14.50.

Lion with mane
This version of the lion with mane from Wade was from the Red Rose Tea Collection of Wildlife Animals and is worth around £4.00.

There's not a lot of information about this cutout log on the internet other than some call it a vase or trinket tray. It's only worth around £3.00.

From the Circus Animals series for Tom Smith's Party Crackers from the mid-'70s, this Wade whimsie is worth around £13.00 for some reason.

Mouse - golden
From set 8 of the English Whimsies, 1977, this Wade whimsie is the mouse and worth around £6.99.

I also have the dark version of this mouse, too.

Mouse - sleeping
A rare white mouse sleeping. Bought for me by my sister Amanda, along with the red crab, the butterfly and the large Red Setter. This sleeping mouse is selling for around £8-10.00 on eBay.

Mr Chuckle Bean
From 2002, Cadbury's Mr Chuckle Bean (with green feet) is a Wade whimsie and on eBay at around £10.87.

Old King Cole
From Wade's Canadian Red Rose Tea collection, series 2, this is dated between 1971-1979 and is worth around £8.00.

Old Woman Who Lived In A Shoe - dark
From Wade's Canadian Red Rose Tea collection, this is dated between 1971-1979 and is worth around £5.00.

Orangutang
From set 10 of the English Whimsies and dated between 1979-1984, this is the orangutan and is only worth around £2.50.

Otter
Another Canadian Red Rose Tea whimsie dated 1967-1973 and worth about £11.00.

Otter

This baby otter was produced for the Arundel Collectors Meet in 2001.   Only a small quantity was produced in beige as, prior to the event, a decision was made to change the colour to grey. It sells for £12 on eBay.

Owl
From set 3 of the English Whimsies, dated 1972-1984 this is the owl and is worth around £2.50.

Panda Bear
It's difficult to find this particular bear but it looks as though it's part of a three figurine set, one giant panda and two cubs and this is one of the cubs. Either way, I'd date it around 1958-1961 and worth about £4.00 on its own and maybe around £15.00 as a set of three.

Pelican
The Wade pelican comes from set 9 of the English Whimsies and was produced between 1978-1984. It's worth about £5.00.

Penguin
This is the smaller version of the King Penguin seen online. It also got a big chip missing from the base so is probably worthless. I need to replace it... and probably with the King Penguin version.

Penguin - grey
This penguin is from set 12 of the English Whimsies and was produced between 1979-1984. It's worth about £7.50.

Pied Piper
Wade's Pied Piper is from Canadian's Red Rose Tea collection for party crackers and dates from 1971-1979. It's worth about £5.00.

Pilot - Bear Ambitions

Also known as 'Alex The Aviator.' It's showing on eBay as £4.99. 

Pine Marten

This whimsie comes from set 5 of the English Whimsies and was produced between 1974-1984. Its value is about £7.50.

Pipe stand with Alsatian

Seen online at about £10.00, this is a pipe stand with large Alsatian, also known as a pipe rest.

Platypus

There's no information on the Wade platypus online. My guess though, is that it would be worth about £2.50.

Polar Bear - large

This is a large Wade whimsie of the polar bear, and is from the first series (Set 6 - Polar animals) and produced between 1956-1961. It's worth about £17.50 but has been seen online going for £32.00.

Polar Bear - large

Sometimes referred to as Whoppa, these are the larger whimsies and this is the Polar Bear. I think it's worth about £6.00.

Polar Bear - white

The white polar bear is from the American series (set 2) from 1985-1994 and is worth about £7.50-8.00.

Polar Bear

This Wade whimsie polar bear cub is from the 1956 first original series, Set 6 of Polar Animals. It's worth £15.50 in mint condition but my one has a chip out of one of the front paws so may only be worth £4.00.

Polar Bear

The small standard size of Wade Whimsie is this polar bear with a black nose. It's worth around £3.25.

Pony

This rare Wade whimsie pony is from the Whimsie-land series from 1984. In excellent condition, it's worth £10.00.

Poodle

There is little information on the internet about this Wade poodle. I'm guessing it's worth around £4.00.

Poodle - Circus

This Wade circus poodle is from the circus Animals and is worth about £13.00.

Protoceratops

Dated around 1993, this rare protoceratops is from the dinosaur collection and is worth about £10.00.

Puppy

This puppy whimsie is worth about £2.00.

I have this puppy in blue, also.

This whimsie was from 1972 and was one of the Nursery Rhymes collection. It's worth about £6.00.

Rabbit

This rabbit is one of my earlier whimsies that I collected. It's from the mid-seventies and is only worth about £2.00.

Rabbit - hind legs

This rabbit comes from the Whimsie-land series produced in 1984. It's worth £12.00.

Ram

There is not a lot of information on the internet about this whimsie. I call it a ram but have seen it referred to as a black sheep too. I think it's only worth about £2.00.

Red Riding Hood

This whimsie comes from set 1 of the Nursery Whimsies and is from 2001. It is valued at £4.00.

Red Setter - large

This is the large Red Setter bought for me by my sister Amanda along with the red crab, butterfly and mouse sleeping. From seeing these for sale on eBay, I estimate that this, as it's in mint condition, would be around £8-10.

Retriever

This retriever whimsie comes from set 3 of the English Country Animals series and is rare as it is from the first whimsies produced dating between 1955-1958. For this reason, its value is £14.50.

'Rhino' (from The Flintstones)

This is Rhino from the Flintstones and was produced by Wade for a set of party Christmas crackers in 1965. It's worth about £5.00.

Rhinoceros

The male rhino from the Red Rose Tea Noah's Ark series. It's only worth about £2.00.

Rhinoceros

The grey rhino from the Wildlife series was produced by Wade for Tom Smith's party crackers between 196-1987. It's worth around £3.00.

Ride a Cock Horse

This whimsie comes from the Tales from the Nursery series produced by Wade between 1994-1997. It's worth about £4.00.

Sabre-toothed Tiger

This sabre-toothed tiger is worth about £2.00.

Sea Lion

Unsure from which set, but set 12 and 1980, this is the seal. It's worth about £4.00.

Sea Lion - Circus

This circus seal is from a set of circus animals produced by Wade for party crackers. It's worth around £12.50.

Sheep

From one of The Red Rose Tea collection, this is the sheep whimsie and is worth around £3.00.

Shetland Pony

Not sure which set and year this is from but it's the Shetland Pony and worth around £4.00.

Squirrel

The Wade squirrel - worth about £2.00.

Squirrel - dark

This Wade whimsie brown squirrel comes from the British Wildlife series produced during the period 1980-81. Its value is £3.75.

Starfish

This shallow starfish shaped dish was produced by Wade, Ireland during the period of 1973-1984. It's about £10.00 in value.

Strongman - Circus

From the Red Rose Tea Circus Series dating 1994-1999, this strongman whimsie is valued at around £10.00.

Terrier - left

This is one of two terriers are normally seen and sold with a large seated Cairn terrier and are seen on eBay for around £12.99 for all three... so I assume this left-facing one maybe worth £3.00.

Three Bears 

From the miniature Nurseries series produced by Wade between 1971-1979 for the Canadian Red Rose Tea company. This whimsie is valued at £10.00.

Tiger 

This tiger comes from set 10 of the English Whimsies produced by Wade between 1979-1984. It's valued at around £3.50.

Tiger - Circus

The circus tiger comes from the Circus series produced by Wade for Tom Smith's party crackers between 1978-1979. It's worth about £4.00.

Tortoise

A small tortoise as there are three sizes. Probably valued around £4.00 on its own.

Treasure Chest

This is the Wade treasure chest and is on eBay for around £2.50.

Trout

A vintage Red Rose tea Whimsie figurine of a trout created by Wade of England for the Canadian series 1967 to 1983. From set 3 of the 1972 English Whimsies series, this is the trout and it's worth about £4.00, though it has been online as going for £16.00.

Turtle

One of the many turtles from Wade. This one is valued at around £2.00.

The walrus from Wade, one of the whimsies from set 6 of the Snow Life Animals and is worth around £4.50.

Weasel

This weasel is from the British Wildlife series produced between 1980-1981 and valued at around £3.00.

Wild Boar - golden

The dark coloured wild boar is from set 11 of the English Whimsies between 1979-1984 and is valued at about £3.00.

This zebra is from set 7 of the English Whimsies and were made between 1976-1984. It's valued between £4.50 and £7.00.
